Dr. Mamie Jordan-Hughes, Houston, TX
 
A Woman With A Vision
 
Dr. Hughes is a long time Houstonian, born in Tyler.Texas. She is the granddaughter of Roland Jackson (Church of Christ Minister in Center, Texas) and wife Mary.  She was baptized at the age of twelve at North Tenneha Church of Christ where her Father (Martin Smith) was a Deacon and her mother (Vera Smith)owned a day care and church members sent their children to her center. Mamie was very active in all youth activities at North Tenneha.

Dr. Hughes has been a Professor of  Sociology and Multicultural-Studies at San Jacinto College for over thirty years.  She was the first African American hired in Academics there and also the first Graduate Teaching Fellow in Sociology hired by University of Houston, University Park. 

Her educational experiences are: BA (Sociology); Texas Southern University,  MA (Sociology); University of Houston, ABD (Social Psychology); University of Houston, EdD (Education); City University of Los Angeles;  IIJIE Board Certified Faith Based Counselor;Co-Founder of   "Emotions Anonymous" (a Counseling Service).
 
She has received numerous Honors and Awards:

    Voted Woman of the Year by The American Business and Professional Women
    Honored as "Renown Scholar and Professor" - by Rod Risley-Director
    PHI THETA KAPPA Foundation
 
Selected as "Honored Professor" by PHI BETA LAMDA and  OPTIMIST International.
 
"Honored Professor" and winner of the "Celebrating Our Elders Contest" -University of Houston-Clear Lake.
 
Selected as "Keynote Speaker" for the "All Scott Reunion":  The reuniting of over 700 students who had attended Emmett Scott High School-Tyler, Texas.
 
Honored as a "National Thespian" by the National Thespian Society
Participated (twice) in the "Distinguished Professor's Faculty Symposium"
 
Selected presenter  in the  "Town Hall Meeting: the President's Initiative on Race Relations in the US".

She is a member of American Sociological Association, Texas College Teachers Association, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and the Raven Scholars. Most importantly  she is an active member of the South Union Church of Christ where she has worn many hats:  Ladies Bible Class Teacher, Former CO-Youth Development Coordinator and Former CO-Black History Program Coordinator.  She is  the  Founder of  the "Creative and Performing Arts Ministry", where she produces and directs full length plays.  The group has had two major (successful)  productions presented at the Marriott Hotel in the Galleria.  One has been made into a"play-movie".  This is her greatest joy but is a challenge when you have to commit a year of your life to produce these large events .
 
She is married to Charles Hughes, her friend and love.  They have one son:(Ricky), daughter-in-law (Felecia) and GRANDDAUGHTER (ALYIA) who is the joy of her life.
 
Her favorite scripture is Psalms 139: "Oh Lord you have searched  me and you know me... You are familiar with all my ways..."
